ARBOR VITAE EVOLUTIEF
About
Arbor Vitae is Latin for “The Tree of Life”.
Si-lest´ is a designer based in Jhb.
“I have created an illustrative character called 'Arbor Vitae' by combining the base body' of a tree and the top body' of a woman. She symbolizes the constant interchanging play between 'being modern-day women' and our 'first natural nature'.
At first the character is very stalky or stiff as women are conditioned to take on the role of fragile / inferior / softer / vulnerable gender. Strong women often experience a time of soul slaying, where we participate involuntary in what is dictated as 'right'… many women end up losing their individualism and become part of the robotic masses that society prescribes. In contrast to this, the tree always stays true to her nature: natural world / natural history / character / temperament. It's time for women (and men) to get back to their 'roots' by discovering their own unique soul that lives within the true nature.
Arbor Vitae is slowly 'forced' through an evolution process of soul searching where she goes on a journey to discover herself, and the many aspects of life. Her journey starts as an 'Afrikaner' in Johannesburg, but with time she becomes a 'South African' as she visits the roads of her home country. In the end, she becomes human by being true to herself. Allowing her unique strong spirit to flow.
